Description

The Mother-Infant Dyad

There is a growing body of knowledge around the importance and benefits of supporting the mother-infant dyad as one unit rather than 2 separate individuals. With this in mind, this course explores the concepts of the fourth trimester and lack of preparedness, and how this impacts the mother-infant dyad. We will look at the symbiotic relationships between the mother and the infant, and examine the positive effects of skin to skin (including its relationship with breastfeeding rates).  We will briefly overview the biomechanical aspects of breastfeeding and tongue tie.

The theory element of this course will be supported by a practical demonstration on some useful techniques for treating infants presenting with feeding difficulties.

Topics covered

  • Exploring the importance of the 4th trimester and the mother-infant dyad (MID)
  • Recognising the interactions between MID, infant feeding and maternal depression
  • Examining how the mothers experience in pregnancy, birth and post-partum affects the MID and infant feeding
  • Skin-to-skin
  • Tongue tie
  • Breastfeeding and manual therapy

Duration – 4 hours
